Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, commonly known as NMN, is a naturally occurring molecule and a precursor involved in the body's production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+).
NAD+ is a coenzyme involved in fundamental cellular processes and has become an important area of scientific research.
NMN has attracted particular research interest because of its relationship with NAD+.
What is NAD+?
NAD+ — nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide — is present throughout the body's cells and participates in numerous biochemical reactions.
Researchers have investigated how NAD+ concentrations change with age and whether NAD+ precursors such as NMN can influence NAD+ status.
While NAD+ biology is well established, research into NMN supplementation in humans is still developing. Many proposed effects of NMN have historically come from laboratory and animal research rather than large, long-term human clinical trials.

Why are researchers interested in NMN?

NMN is one of the molecules involved in the biological pathways through which the body produces NAD+.
Human clinical studies have therefore investigated whether taking NMN orally can influence NAD+ concentrations.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 30 healthy adults investigated 250 mg of NMN daily for 12 weeks. Researchers reported increased whole-blood NAD+ concentrations compared with baseline, with no obvious adverse effects reported during the study.

Another randomised clinical trial involving 80 generally healthy middle-aged adults investigated daily doses of 300 mg, 600 mg and 900 mg over 60 days. Blood NAD concentrations increased in the NMN groups during the study.

Promising research.
Still developing.
Human clinical research into NMN remains relatively limited.
Studies have investigated different doses of NMN over different periods, examining NAD+ concentrations, tolerability and a range of physiological outcomes.
Importantly, a change in a biological marker such as NAD+ does not automatically demonstrate a particular health benefit.
Research findings also vary depending on the outcome being measured, the study population, dosage and duration.
For this reason, we believe NMN research should be presented for what it is: an evolving area of scientific investigation rather than established proof of broad health benefits.

What has been studied?
Short-duration human studies have investigated a range of NMN doses.
For example, one randomised controlled trial investigated 1,250 mg of NMN daily for four weeks in 31 healthy adults and reported no severe adverse events during the study.

However, short-term studies should not be interpreted as establishing the long-term safety of NMN for everyone.
